What is the difference between these two terms? Sometimes the explanation of the concept by the garden's owner is not matching to the actual layout, brings about a synical smile on the expert's face.

Since it's your garden, you are free to tell about whatever concept and theme of your garden. But, it actually provides an overview to your guests to start accessing the design from overall to the detail design of your garden. Most of the garden today are a combination of several approaches. It's very important to know how these combination can be designed and adopted. The method of adapting the approaches is called Concept. It has to take care about the existence of pathway, functional space, lighting, neighborhood and others, before and after the design to be completed. In the process, maybe there exist contradiction among the approaches. This is where your intelligent and wisdom to use the effect of the contradictions that bears results. So, concept is not a one word definition but a string of explanations.

Today it's impossible to use a concept as one approach only. Unless you are a die-hard fan that want to express every elements in the approach. So, if a Buddist or a Muslim says that his garden is totally Bali, it's very sceptical because the Bali concept itself contains a lot of religious element from Hinduism.

For example, a garden owner named Mrs Bean likes Bali Garden so much. She designed the outdoor decor elements with the use of tropical plants, textured walls, and wall mounted fountains in her garden. These incomplete elements are not qualified to be called Bali Garden because she also has a herbal garden where there are plants such as Chilli, Coriander Leaves, Lemon Grass, Ginger etc. grown in the garden for her to use in her cooking. This is where the concept plays an important role to explain how adaptation and design of the garden was done by Mrs Bean.

The concept maybe a divisions of small space with multi functions like relaxation area and guest area at the patio, reception area at the side of the house and cloth hanging at the back of the house. The consept shall also briefly explains why the fuctional space located at that particular area, it also involves her daily routine jobs.

Compare to concept, a theme is a basic guidelines in the process of adapting and designing what the owner wants. The theme can be explained in one short name and simple. You are free to name the theme even you can use your own name.

For example of Mrs Bean's garden. Since it's based upon her daily routine jobs, so it is called Mrs Bean's Garden. It's because the garden expressed her personality based on the use of the space and her taste for Bali garden design and herbal garden.

Hence, in designing a privte garden, it is very vital to choose what you really loves and passionate about and in accordance to your personality. To copy what other people dis sometimes restricts your freedom to be more creative. However, it is not wrong to emulate some portions of what you likes in other people's garden as long as it is suitable to you. It's part of designing job. Furthermore, small imitations of ideas should not be the concept and theme of your own garden because it just constitutes a small components of the garden. After you are satisfied with your garden, name it. It's yours. Be proud of it.
